68% of Print Buyers Will Choose Sustainable Sheet Labels by 2026
A quiet shift is happening with sheet labels on my pressroom bench. The same stock that used to sit in a plain white box is now going onto recycled kraft, clear films that separate from their liner cleanly, and paper stocks that pass home-compost tests. It's not a niche request anymore. Buyers are asking for it before we even get to pricing.
I've spent most of my career watching labels go through presses. The change is more practical than the marketing slogans suggest. Sheet labels still need to run through a laser or inkjet printer, survive a warehouse, and stick to a jar without bubbling. The new challenge is making all of that work with materials that feel responsible.

This article is not a forecast from a consultancy. It's what I'm seeing as a print engineer working with packaging teams across North America, and where the numbers seem to be heading.
Recyclable and Biodegradable Materials
The label industry has one dirty secret: most labelstock still ends up in a landfill. The liner paper, especially silicone-coated glassine, is often not recyclable. Even if the label is removed, the liner can contaminate paper mills. That's why the first question buyers now ask is not about gloss level. It's whether the sheet labels can go into a recycling bin together with the container.
For labels for jars, we now hand customers sheet labels with water-based adhesives that wash off cleanly in a caustic soda bath, common in glass and plastic recycling. The label face has to hold ink through the soak, but the adhesive has to let go the moment the container hits the wash. That balance is harder than it sounds. A too-sticky adhesive leaves residue; a too-light one lifts off in transport.
There are trade-offs. A home-compostable facestock with a low-tack adhesive can fail on curved surfaces or in cold storage. I've seen fleets of sheet labels blister on jars at 40% humidity. The fix is often a more expensive acrylic adhesive, which raises the cost per roll. But the direction is clear: material suppliers are investing in linerless systems and films with a smaller carbon footprint.
Consumer Demand for Sustainability
Retailers are making the choice easier. Several major chains now prefer labels on primary packaging to carry clear recycling instructions. This pushes print buyers toward sheet labels with stable ink adhesion and enough fade resistance for extended shelf life.
The data says the same. In a 2024 survey, 73% of consumers said they'd pay extra for packaging they believe is recyclable. But those consumers aren't trained in recycling streams. They'll throw an HDPE bottle with a shrink sleeve into a blue bin and assume it's fine. This is where the label becomes a communication tool.
From my side, this demand has practical consequences. Soy-based inks are great for compostable stocks, but they can be less opaque than solvent inks. Double hits on a flexo station can fix banding, but it adds minutes to make-ready. We accept that when the order is sheet labels, because the client's marketing team needs to meet their sustainability target.
Personalization and Customization
The second force changing sheet labels is digital workflow. Many customers no longer order 10,000 identical sheets. They order a master run of blank sheets, then print variable data in-house.
