The Office Sticky-Stuff Checklist: E6000 Strength, Poster Mounting, and Large Envelope Addressing
I'm an office administrator for a 60-person company, which means I manage the weird middle ground between procurement and facilities. I order supplies, coordinate with print vendors, and occasionally fix the things that break. Over the last five years, I went from guessing to using a repeatable checklist. This is the version I wish I had when I took over purchasing in 2020. It covers the six steps I run through before glueing, mounting, labelling, or mailing anything.
The Six-Step Checklist
1. Match the adhesive to the actual job
Here's the thing: “how strong is this glue?” isn't the first question. The first question is “what am I sticking, and where will it live?” Three things determine which adhesive to grab: the material you're sticking, how much movement it will see, and how long you can wait for the cure. In that order.
I keep E6000 in our supply closet because it handles most substrates—plastic, metal, wood, glass, ceramics. If you're looking for e6000 strength without a lot of bulk, the original formula is usually the answer. People think a more expensive glue means a stronger bond. Actually, the right adhesive for the material matters more than the price.
For fabric, e6000 on fabric works if you apply a thin bead, press it flat, and give it a full 24 hours to cure. It's not a quick DIY fix. It's a permanent repair that takes patience. To be fair, E6000 Plus is better in some situations. That's where e6000 vs e6000 plus matters. Plus has a thicker body and a shorter set time, so I use it for gaps and vertical repairs. The original is thinner and works well for clean, flat surfaces. Neither is “better”—they're different tools.
I'm not a materials scientist, so I can't speak to chemical compatibility. What I can tell you from a purchasing perspective is to buy a small tube first and test it on a scrap piece of the actual material. That test has saved us more than once.
2. Test on a real sample before touching the actual item
Last spring, we were repairing a visitor chair with fabric arms. I was about to apply E6000 directly to the tear and clamp it. Then I tested on a swatch from the underside. The adhesive worked, but the fabric had a stretchy backing that pulled apart when flexed. We needed a different flexible adhesive for that area; E6000 stayed in the drawer.
So glad I tested first. I was one click away from ruining a $400 chair.
Before any repair, clean the surfaces with isopropyl alcohol, let them dry completely, and lightly rough glossy plastics with fine sandpaper. A clean surface matters more than how much glue you use. Then hold the pieces together with painter's tape or a small clamp and don't move them for at least a few hours.
3. Mount printed posters the right way
Print requests come across my desk more than people expect. The latest one was a femtanyl poster for a local music event. We printed it at 18″ x 24″ and needed to mount it to foam board for display. If you're gonna print posters, use spray adhesive for large flat surfaces—not a tube of rubbery glue. E6000 dries flexible and can wrinkle thin paper if you apply too much. Spray adhesive gives even coverage and a cleaner finish.
Actually, if the poster is going into a standard frame, you can skip mounting altogether and just print on heavyweight paper. Mounting is only worth it when the piece needs to stand on its own, like a tabletop sign or a wall board.
For custom printing orders, keep the file resolution at 300 DPI and add a 0.125-inch bleed. Choose heavier paper—100 lb cover, for example—if the poster will be mounted or shipped. Text-weight paper wrinkles easily and makes you look sloppy in front of the person who requested it. When using spray adhesive, work in a well-ventilated area and protect the floor with a drop cloth. Spray both surfaces lightly, wait a minute for the adhesive to become tacky, then press the poster onto the board from the center outward. A credit card works as a squeegee to push out air bubbles.
4. Label permanent items without ruining them
This is one of those requests that sounds simple: “Can you add names to the new water bottles?” We ordered twenty Rambler® 26 oz water bottle with chug cap bottles for the sales team and needed to tell them apart. Engraving is the best long-term option, but we needed a quick solution. We printed small vinyl name labels and bonded them to the exterior with a thin layer of E6000.
Why vinyl instead of paper? Waterproof, flexible, and won't peel at the edges. If you don't have vinyl labels, print on white address labels and cover the top with clear packing tape before cutting them out. That works in a pinch.
Important: put the label on the outside, not near the mouthpiece, and let the adhesive cure fully. I do not recommend any adhesive for the inside of a bottle or on anything that touches food or drink. That's beyond my expertise and outside safety guidelines. And tell the team to hand-wash those bottles. The label probably won't survive a dishwasher cycle.
5. Address large envelopes so they actually arrive
The question I get from new hires is where to write address on large envelope. The answer isn't “anywhere it fits.” USPS uses optical scanners, and the bottom and right edges need to stay clear. Here's the version I use:
- Delivery address: lower-right quadrant, parallel to the bottom edge.
- Return address: upper-left corner.
- Clear space: at least 1 inch from the bottom and right edges.
- Text: dark ink, legible print, no decorative fonts.
If your handwriting is messy, print the address on a label instead. It's faster and easier for the scanner to read. Use the same format for the return address, and keep it in the upper-left corner so it doesn't get confused with the delivery address. For bulk mailings—say, event invites or sales packets—set up a label template so the address block sits in the same place on every envelope. It takes ten extra minutes and saves a lot of returned mail.
According to USPS (usps.com), as of January 2025, a First-Class large envelope starts at $1.50 for the first ounce and $0.28 for each additional ounce. Large envelopes—what USPS calls flats—can be up to 12″ x 15″ and 0.75″ thick. If you write the address sideways or too close to the edge, the envelope can be returned. We learned this the hard way when a vendor shipment came back after three weeks.
6. Keep a small repair-and-mail kit in stock
After managing this long enough, I stopped ordering random supplies and built a small inventory. It's not fancy:
- E6000 original and E6000 Plus.
- Isopropyl alcohol and lint-free cloths for surface prep.
- Clamps and painter's tape to hold parts while curing.
- Spray adhesive for poster mounting.
- Large envelopes (10″ x 13″) and a label printer.
This kit cut our repair requests by maybe 60%. The rest go to a vendor or a specialist. I order these from two vendors: one for adhesives and print supplies, another for envelopes and packaging. Keeping the list short makes reordering fast and keeps our expense reports cleaner.
Common mistakes I see (and have made)
- Skipping the cure time. E6000 can feel dry in an hour but reaches full strength around 24–72 hours. If you rush it, the bond fails and you blame the glue.
- Assuming all adhesives are the same. The strength of E6000 is great, but it's not a universal welder. On silicone or some plastics, it won't stick. Test first.
- Putting the address on the back of a large envelope. The mailing side needs to be the front. Surprising how often this happens.
- Using too much adhesive. A thin bead is stronger than a glob. Thick layers take longer to cure and can ooze out the sides.
- Forgetting to order supplies before you need them. Keep the kit stocked so you're not waiting three days for a $6 tube of glue while a chair sits disassembled in the hallway.
The surprise wasn't the adhesive's strength. It was how much the cure time mattered. Once I started treating that as part of the job, our repairs actually stayed fixed.
One more thing: this checklist works for our office because we're a small-to-mid-size company with predictable requests. If you're running a warehouse or a production line, your materials, volumes, and safety rules are different. But for the daily “can you fix this?” chaos, these six steps cover most of the bases.
